Description
The Golden Gate is an ancient historical door carved inside Al-Aqsa’s eastern wall. It consists of two gates, one to the south (Ar-Rahma - “The Mercy”) and one to the north (At-Tawbah - “The Repentance”). The date of its construction is disputed but opinions are shared between a late Byzantine and an early Umayyad date.
In Christian apocryphal texts, the gate was the scene of the meeting between the parents of Mary after the Annunciation, and it is also said that Jesus passed through this gate on Palm Sunday.
