Description

Shechem was a small town in Samaria where Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman at the well.

"Come to me all you who are thirsty," is the clear message of Jesus in the small Samaritan town of Shechem . While travelling back to Galilee from preaching the Good News of the Kingdom in Judea, Jesus took the most direct route, which meant passing through Samaria the home of the Samaritans.

It was in this region, in the town of Shechem that we have one of the most interesting encounters recorded in Scripture (John 4:1-26).

Jesus is waiting by the town well when a Samaritan woman comes to draw water. Cutting through the social divides of the day, Jesus asks the woman, "Will you give me a drink?"

This simple question begins a fascinating dialogue between them, where Jesus makes this powerful statement: "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The Samaritan woman is "thirsty" for this kind of "water," for as Jesus will soon prophetically expose, she has been trying to "fill" her life with the love of men (six men in fact), but what she really needs is the fulfilling love of God offered freely through His son Jesus, the messiah.

Indeed the conversation ends with a discussion about Messiah with the Samaritan woman saying, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
